Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group (VERG) is a progressive, 7,000 square foot state-of-the-art emergency and referral hospital in the trendy Park Slope section of Brooklyn.

We are a 24-hour emergency and referral hospital in Brooklyn, a borough of 3.5 million people, and receive referrals from over 100 local practices, which provide us with diverse and interesting cases.

Opened in 2005, VERG has experienced tremendous growth, both in staff and caseload. Specialty services include: Surgery (General, Orthopedic, and Neurosurgery), Internal Medicine, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Neurology and Emergency/Critical Care. Support staff consists of an amazing group of highly-skilled and trained technicians and assistants. Our facility is equipped with digital x-ray (DR), dedicated Phillips abdominal and cardiac ultrasound units, endoscopy, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, a surgery suite with 3 complete stations and full laboratory – including the Heska CBC and chemistry analyzers, I-stats, and SCA 2000 for coagulation profiles. We also have veterinary MRI, CT and 3D imaging available to help aid in diagnosis.

The hospital is located in an upscale section of Brooklyn, minutes from downtown Manhattan. Brooklyn has more than enough to keep a person entertained with the collection of museums, parks, and historical landmarks that make Brooklyn such a popular tourist destination. The area is family-friendly, but also trendy enough for the younger crowd with numerous upscale restaurants and lounges along “Restaurant Row” just a block away. In addition, we are minutes away from the beautiful Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Barclay’s Center and the cultural hub of Manhattan.

VERG prides itself on being a fun yet intellectually stimulating place to work. Our staff looks forward to coming to work each day and we are seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates who share these attributes with us.

VERG EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

VERG has entered its 16th year of successful intern and extern training. Because we are a smaller facility, our students benefit from individualized attention. We offer externships, internships and undergraduate opportunities throughout the year.

All applicants should email a resume and cover letter with relevant experience to education@verg-brooklyn.com to schedule a phone/video interview.

UNDERGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to our graduate and post-graduate programs, VERG offers veterinary students undergraduate opportunities. These programs will allow students to observe the robust and diverse case load that VERG has to offer. Volunteers may be asked to assist in various essential aspects of hospital maintenance; including restocking and kennel cleaning. Many of our volunteers go on to join the VERG team in paid positions later on. Please be aware that this position doesn’t include participating in patient care, but volunteers are encouraged to ask questions of our staff to learn more about the various procedures to help further their career in veterinary medicine.

All applicants should email a resume and cover letter with relevant experience to education@verg-brooklyn.com to schedule a phone/video interview.

*Please note, this is an unpaid position

EXTERNSHIPS

VERG offers externships throughout the year to accredited graduate veterinary students. Externships are a great way to experience the dynamic and fast paced nature of an emergency veterinary practice. Not only will our externs get the opportunity to observe and learn from our world-class veterinary doctors and surgeons, but they will experience a wide range of emergent and specialty cases. Although our goal is to accommodate externs into the specialty of their choice, they will also spend time in the heart of our hospital with our emergency services. Externs are encouraged to attend lectures, daily rounds and observe procedures. We offer one or two-week rotations to first through third year students and two-to-four-week rotations to final year veterinary students. VERG externships are booked up to three months in advance so students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

VERG requires 10-hour shifts, five days a week for externships and offers either day or swing shifts. This way, they will experience the rush and extensive case load of our hospital.

*These externships are unpaid; however, we are happy to sign off on any necessary paperwork and evaluation forms so that they receive the necessary credit for the experience.

All applicants should email a resume and cover letter with relevant experience to education@verg-brooklyn.com to schedule a phone/video interview.

INTERNSHIPS

Our interns are an integral part of the VERG team and work, train and learn in a fast-paced environment. During their time with our internship program, interns will be placed within the various specialties with approximately one-third of their time devoted to emergency cases. While interns have primary case responsibility, they are never alone on emergency shifts and will work alongside with one of our experienced emergency clinicians gaining valuable knowledge and support. Advanced procedures, including endoscopy and surgery, are routine for emergency cases, and interns will have direct involvement in the cases from start to finish. A typical week for a VERG intern includes an average of five shifts per week with two days off. We currently offer two distinct internship opportunities and accept. third- and fourth-year veterinary students for internship opportunities. Our internship program will begin accepting applicant for the new year beginning in the Fall of 2021.

For more information about our internship program and availability, please review our posting at the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (www.virmp.com), or email us at education@verg-brooklyn.com
