Bronchoscopy
Bronchoscopy is used to visualize the upper and lower respiratory tract – including the trachea and main stem bronchi.
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can be used to identify collapsing trachea, tracheal and bronchial foreign bodies, and tumors. Tracheal and bronchial samples can be obtained for cytology and culture and sensitivity via endotracheal wash (ETW) or broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL). Biopsies can be obtained for identifying tumors or congenital defects such as ciliary dyskinesia.

Patient #8: 4 year old male, neutered German Shepherd with history of dyspnea – bronchoscopy showed a piece of glass at tracheal bifurcation.
